Tingwall pupils impress with Euro knowledge
Tingwall primary pupils will compete in the Scottish final of Euroquiz in May, after winning Wednesday’s local heat between Shetland schools.
The competition, organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) is aimed at P6 classes to encourage pupils to learn facts about the countries of Europe.
Primary pupils from six Shetland schools – Dunrossness, Cunningsburgh and Tingwall primaries and Mid Yell, Aith and Sandwick junior highs – took part in the quiz today at Islesburgh Community Centre, answering 60 questions in four rounds on geography, language, culture, history and general knowledge of Europe.
A tense fifth and final round, in a head-to-head format, saw the pupils from Tingwall triumph over the team from Aith.
The Tingwall pupils will now represent Shetland at the national final, held at the Scottish Parliament in May, where school teams from around 30 local authorities are expected to take part.
Lewie Peterson from the SIC schools service said: “I always look forward to the local Euroquiz heats and I’ve been impressed again today by the pupils’ enthusiasm and depth of knowledge of Europe.
“I’d like to congratulate all the teams for their performances today and thank the school staff who have provided support to them in recent weeks.”

School quizzes are fun and I commend all the bairns on their hard work and enthusiasm. SEET,the organisers, hold themselves out to be a “non political charity”. If any reader’s curiousity is sufficiently piqued then a simple online review of SEET’s origins,of SEET trustees, their backgrounds and interests might render a new definition of the words “non political” with which they (the readers) are unfamiliar and, from which, they may be able to draw their own conclusions.
