Scott and McArthur welcome progress on forensic services

Shetland MSP Tavish Scott and his Orkney counterpart Liam McArthur have welcomed the Scottish government’s commitment to providing forensic testing services for victims of sexual assault in the Northern Isles.

Following a meeting with justice minister Michael Matheson, they referred to the progress being made to provide services without the need for an overnight ferry or a plane jouney to Aberdeen.

Mr Scott said: “The cabinet secretary’s reassurances about a long-term solution for forensic testing are welcome. We look forward to seeing the government deliver on its commitment to provide the equipment that is needed in Shetland.

“The Island NHS boards must also be commended for their efforts in working towards a sustainable service for victims in the Northern Isles. This includes the local training for GPs in Shetland to undertake the forensic examinations.

“We want to see an end to the traumatic trips survivors of sexual assault must take in order to collect the evidence that might help convict their attackers. The sooner the new service is in place, the better.”
