Hi.
I am not surprised to read of the cycle and car collision at Dale. Having said that, the road at Dale is about the best we have in Shetland, so really bad luck.
I have been trying for several years to encourage some safety measures in the Whiteness / Weisdale area.
We live close to the main road at Westerhouse, Whiteness, and the insensitive and reckless driving is really scary at times. The road is narrower than the required regulation width with no hard verge and full of blind corners and dips- just about the worst road in Shetland.
I have been told by the SIC Roads dept. that there is no money for any improvement, but I could argue that the cost of the traffic calming in Lerwick currently underway, would put in a verge and footpath from the Nesbister junction right through to Sound-Side. This would be a much appreciated improvement, the opposite of the work currently being carried out a the Esplande in Lerwick, which it would seem to be less than enthustically received.
Another really cheap safety measure would be a speed reduction, similar to Sandwick, Bixter and many other rural villages.
Its a very odd situation that the SIC Roads department nearly always pick jobs that really do not require attention, and appear to be happy to let a blatant risk go unattended??
