POLL: Do you agree with the decision to increase funding for the 3G pitch?

The SIC will stump up an extra £210,000 for a 3G pitch in Lerwick – bringing the council’s total spend to £690,000.

Members of the policy and resources committee agreed the funding on Monday.

But with the vote only narrowly passing with 5-4 in favour, views in the council chamber were split.

Those in favour said it would provide a “legacy” for the council, benefiting young people for years to come.

They pointed out that the project stood to receive substantial external funding contributions, including £500,000 from the Scottish FA and £150,000 from sportscotland.

But others were reluctant to agree more funding for the project at a time when the council has been told to tighten its belt.

And given the challenges facing the site, they were concerned the total bill could climb even higher.

What do you think? Is the 3G pitch a good use of public money? Take part in our poll and let us know your thoughts.
