Delting and Spurs in final clash

THE LIZZIE Polson knockout hockey semi-finals were played last Thursday and Delting and Spurs will now battle it out in the final for the trophy.

Meanwhile, in the Rosebowl League it was draws all round on Monday. Whalsay are still in pole position with only a few games left.

Delting 3, Scalloway 0

Delting were quick to apply pressure and were rewarded when Jillian Copland struck a beautiful shot into the goal.

Boosted by the lead, Delting continued to apply pressure with some strong linking play through Jillian Copland, Brenda Leask and Donna Murray in midfield to the strike force of Jill Hibbert, Julie Kirkness, Lorraine Johnson and Toni Sidgwick.

Scalloway’s defence worked tirelessly to clear the loose balls coming into their circle with Georgia Laurenson’s strength and determination putting an end to many Delting attacks. Laurenson’s strong hit-outs gave Scalloway some great chances with Meg Laurenson, Naomi Johnson and Nicola Smith making good attacking runs. However, they could not penetrate a strong Delting defence.

Both teams continued to fight on in horrible playing conditions with Delting sealing the game with two further goals from Jill Hibbert and Jillian Copland.

Players of the night were Georgia Laurenson for Scalloway and Lorraine Johnson for Delting.

Burra 0, Spurs 0
(Spurs won 2-0 on penalties)

Both teams made their mark from the start with some fine chances at both ends. Burra’s midfield and forwards linked up well and worked their way up the park but the Spurs defence stayed strong to stop them scoring.

Spurs worked hard and applied constant pressure and it was now the Burras defence’s time to shine. They were determined not to let Spurs through and when Stacey Laurenson got two quick fire shots away one after the other Sarah Couper in the goals did amazingly well to save.

The second half began with Burra running their socks off and Spurs matching them every step of the way. As full-time lurked ahead both sides were desperate to score but failed to do so.

Unfortunately Burra missed out on a place in the final by losing 2-0 in the penalty shoot-out.

Burra’s player of the match was Sarah Couper for her brilliant effort in goals, while the Spurs player of the match was Gwen Malcomson for her endless running and marking.

Rosebowl League
Spurs 1, Juniors 1

Spurs were quick to take control with Gwen Malcolmson dominating the midfield. Her ability to spread the ball created space for the Spurs forwards to run into. They were unlucky not to score as their shots were blocked by the Juniors’ defence of Rhiannon Inkster and Lorna Scott who had a great game in right midfield.

Juniors started the second half the stronger of the two sides as Spurs made a series of changes which seemed to unsettle their game. During this period Juniors managed to capitalise on the uncertainty among the Spurs players and scored a well-taken goal with Emma Inkster sweeping in a strong pass which Lorna Scott cracked in with the reverse side of her stick.

Spurs regrouped and picked up their game with Gwen Malcolmson again passing great balls into the circle. Stacey Laurenson sent in a cross which Gail Donohue converted to even the score. Players of the match were for Spurs Gayle Johnston and for Juniors Lorna Scott.

Burra 1, Zetland 1

Zetland pulled ahead in the 14th minute as Hannah Irvine crossed the ball into the back post where Stacey Clark nudged it in past Burra’s stand-in goalie Louise Kok.

Burra fought back hard and applied good pressure towards the end of the half, and Julie Keith equalised with a well-deserved goal.

In the second half Burra had many opportunities on goal through good linking between Josie Jamieson and Sarah Young. Kristan Robertson made a great break towards the goal although when a foul was made by a Zetland defender Burra were awarded a penalty flick. Josie Jamieson took on goalie Debbie Kane but Kane made a great save.

Zetland’s Lisa Johnson kept pushing the ball into their attacking half but Burra’s strong defence ensured the final score remained at 1-1.

Players of the match were Sarah Young for Burra and Hannah Irvine for Zetland.
