Burra wins after taking early lead
HOCKEY’s Grutness Trophy competition saw Spurs beat Whalsay, Burra triumph over Zetland, Whalsay regain points with a goodwin against Scalloway, and Zetland and Delting draw.
At the midway point in the single league Spurs still head the table, with Burra second and Zetland one point behind in third. The next round of matches in the Grutness will resume in a couple of weeks.
Next week sees the Shearer Shield league start again, and it is Whalsay who are leading the way with the Delts in second position. Both are undefeated as all the teams play out their last few matches of the Shearer Shield.
Grutness Trophy
Whalsay 0, Spurs 2
Whalsay applied pressure during the first 10 minutes and were unlucky not get on the score sheet.
Spurs Gail Donohue was unfortunate to be injured early on but this did not dampen their determination and Gayle Johnson found acres of space in the circle shot at goal and scored.
This was then followed by another goal for Spurs when Stacey Laurenson shot from the top of the D and found the backboard.
Whalsay continued to apply pressure to the spurs defence and almost saw a goal when Catherine Williamsons superb shot was saved by the Spurs goalie.
Undeterred by the score, Whalsay came out fighting in the second half. With Diane Shearer, Nicola Duthie and Williamson working well up the left side of the pitch, sweeping strong balls into their team mates in the D, Whalsay were close to score but Ava Sim in Spurs defence worked well to counter any attacks.
Spurs were unlucky not to score when awarded a short corner nearing the end when Fiona Shearer’ shot narrowly missed the back post.
Players of the match were Nicola Duthie for Whalsay and Ava Sim for Spurs.
Zetland 2, Burra 5
Burra took the lead with an early goal from Josie Jamieson.
Jamieson continued to dominate down the right wing and understrength Zetland struggled to cope with her pace and strength on the ball.
However, Zetland tightened up their defence and held on until Jamieson cracked in a superb shot from the edge of the box which rattled into the goal.
Zetland kept their heads up and Shona and Aimee Keith worked hard to penetrate the Burra circle. Julie Halcrow put in some crucial tackles to keep the Zetland attack at bay.
The second half started in a similar fashion with an early goal from Jamieson giving her a hat trick.

Dawn Anderson and Lara Jamieson remained doggedly determined in defence, leaving Helen Robertson in goal to take on attackers coming through the middle. She made some fine interceptions taking on Jamieson at the edge of the box. This gave Zetland the confidence to gain more possession with two shots on goal from Ingrid Nicol hitting the post. Shona Keith worked relentlessly firing shots into the box but Inga Tulloch and Nicol just couldn’t connect with them. Jamieson continued to be creative, lobbing the keeper but the goal was deemed outside the shooting zone. However, she got her fourth soon after, from what seemed an impossible angle to the right of the goal.
Zetland fought back with a close range goal from Aimee Keith. However, the Zetland defence were tiring and Katie Jarmson converted a short corner when she pounced on a rebound following an initial save.
Shona Keith was rewarded for her efforts on the night with the goal of the night when she fired her shot through the Burra defence for the edge of the box.
Best on the night were Josie Jamieson and Shona Keith.
Scalloway 0, Whalsay 3
This was a quite even game but Whalsay did have the edge with their quick, short, accurate passing.
Scalloway started strongly with Mel and Rhiannon Inkster mopping up most of the Whalsay attacks. Georgia Laurenson had some lovely clearances and these helped to push the play into the Whalsay half, but after 12 minutes Zoe Irvine pushed into the top of the circle and made a lovely shot in to give Whalsay the lead.
Scalloway rallied and there were some lovely moves with Sarah Grogan and Naomi Johnson linking well with their forwards. They gained a few short corners but didn’t quite get that break to make the score sheet.
Whalsay continued with their telling passes. Victoria Duthie made some great runs up the right side passing into Deborah Jamieson and Eileen Sandison who always looked menacing when they came into the circle. But it was Zoe Irvine again who made the shot on the 29th minute which led to Whalsay’s second goal.
At the turn Scalloway looked more determined and seemed to be holding off the Whalsay attacks. They pushed forward and Sarah Grogan came quite close but again no crucial goals.
Just when it looked as if the goals had finished for the game Whalsay broke through the Scalloway defence, the goalie came out and made the initial save but Zoe Irvine pounced on the rebound to make the final score three for Whalsay.
Victoria Duthie made the difference for Whalsay and Naomi Johnson shone for Scalloway.
Delting 1, Zetland 1
Both teams pressing for the opening goal with Zetland taking control in the opening stages, their team being recently strengthened by the introduction of several of the junior inter-county squad members.
Margaret Johnston opened the scoring with a strong strike in the circle which went passes the outstretched Toni Sidgwick in the Delting goal.
Delting picked up the pace in the latter stages of the first half and Jillian Copland was rewarded when an excellent strike towards goal was deflected high into the top of the goal off a Zetland defender.
Shortly after the start of the second half Jillian Copland had to leave the field of play following an unfortunate knock in the face. The Delting team substituted and took some time to settle. Helen Robertson and Shona Keith were strong for Zetland and made some telling passes forwards.
Despite several chances for both teams the score remained a draw.
