Wheelers clock up good times

DESPITE appalling weather Shetland Wheelers’ cyclists attained some good results last weekend. The Rising Westerly 100-mile time trial competition was organised by GS Corsa, Aberdeen District and this year incorporated the SVTTA (Scottish Veterens Time Trial Association) 100-mile Time Trial Championship.

Thirty riders had entered the event but the wet, windy and cold conditions saw several riders not even contemplating the start. The course starts on the outskirts of Aberdeen, initially heading south as far as Portlethen and then back towards the city before following a route alongside the River Dee to Ballater and then retracing to Aberdeen.

It was not a day for fast times but Carlos Riise powered around the course seemingly oblivious to the conditions finishing fastest rider, second veteran on standard and a good 15 minutes clear of his nearest rival.

Christine McLean was the only woman to attempt the event on the day and she ended up coming in fifth fastest rider overall with her time of four hours 36 minutes which won her the third veteran on standard prize.

Christine had a success racing the previous weekend when she achieved one of her season’s goals by completing a 25-mile time trial in less than 1 hour. She finished more than two minutes clear of the second placed woman in a PB time of 59:07.
