Volleyball hat night declared a success
WITH no league matches, a volleyball hat night was held last Friday and attracted 29 people, including eight new starters.

SLVC 1, Harry’s Hotspurs 3
(17-25, 25-17, 20-25, 17-25)
The game began with both teams evenly matched, neither able to gain an advantage over the other. It was Harry’s Hotspurs who settled first and got a run of service points from Kevin Moar. SLVC responded with some quality sets from Mandy Phillips allowing Sarah Grogan perfect hitting opportunities. A timeout was called which seemed to distract SLVC and Hotspurs took full advantage winning nine points in a row, winning them the set 25-17.
Phillips continued to set accurately in the second set for the ladies and Denise Morrison had a run of services which allowed SLVC to gain a five-point lead over Hotspurs and force them into a timeout. A great hit from Vicki Henderson was successfully blocked by Andrew Crossan winning Hotspurs the point, although this seemed to encourage Hotspurs who tried hard to dent the ladies’ five-point lead. But SLVC were determined and managed to further extend their lead winning the set 25-17.
Hotspurs came out fighting in the third set and started well with an ace from Shane Jamieson. Jamieson and Crossan were linking well at the net which was giving SLVC few point scoring opportunities. The longest rally of the match saw SLVC using their three touches well to set up attacks and force Hotspurs into defensive action, but Hotspurs were rewarded when they managed to win the point and a rotational error from the ladies gifted Hotspurs another point. Phillips had a run of service winning SLVC valuable points, but Hotspur were focused now and took the set 25-20.
SLVC put their first service of the 4th set into the net and a foot fault on service took Hotspurs to a 5-1 lead. By now Hotspurs were on a roll. Some fine serving from Jamieson made the score 10-1. The ladies fought hard to get themselves back in the match and closed the gap to 6-13. Morrison and Grogan were formidable at the net and further closed the gap to 13-15. However, Hotspurs managed to compose themselves and with some excellent attacking play from Jamieson forced SVLC to take a timeout. This did little to halt Hotspurs’ run of points as they closed out the set by 25-17 and won the match.
MVPs for Harry’s Hotspurs were Andrew Crossan and Louise Moar, for SLVC it was Mandy Phillips and Sarah Grogan.
