Lots to read in the December issue
THE DECEMBER edition of Shetland Life offers up a variety of interesting contributions covering maritime history, sports, food and gardening, along with the usual columns.
Included among this month’s features is a look into the work of boat builder Robbie Tait, with a series of pictures by Dave Donaldson. There is also a selection of pictures of Shetland’s athletes by Kevin Jones in A Good Sport.
Getting into the Christmas spirit, there is a wintry short story from Cathy Feeny and a look at Christmases past as Jean Keith reminisces about childhood memories.
The Chelsea flower show had a Shetland entry this year, and Leslie Lowes looks back at the success of the crofthouse garden, which won its creator, Martin Anderson, a Chelsea Gold Medal.
Also, Val Turner and Chris Dyer outline some of the ways that individuals and community groups can get involved with the archaeology of their local area.
There is also the regular 21 Questions, featuring local musician Gary Peterson, agriculture news from Ronnie Eunson and Joyce Garden on winter’s wildlife.
Also in the regulars, fresh from her trip to South America Ann Prior is back to talk about the history of a famous Uruguayan food company, which surprisingly turns out to be Fray Bentos. Perhaps more dubious than the pies themselves, Ann reveals that the brand name supposedly comes from the name of a local cave-dwelling hermit.
