NAFC graduate

ONE of the NAFC Marine Centre’s recent engineer graduates has received the opportunity to work on the British Antarctic Surveys ship Ernest Shackleton.

Bobby Slater from Tresta applied for the position immediately after obtaining his Engineering Officer of the Watch certificate.

During his last sea phase as a cadet he was placed with British Antarctic Surveys on board the vessel. He enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to apply for a job when he completed his training and was successful in securing the role of junior engineer officer.

NAFC Marine Centre liaison officer Caroline Hepburn said: “Bobby is a very pleasant and capable young man who obtained his professional qualification by studying here.”

Now on the Ernest Shackleton in the Antarctic until early spring, Bobby is one of the supervisors to another NAFC engineer cadet, James Irvine from Whalsay, who is completing his last sea phase before returning to the NAFC in mid-April for his final exams.
