Shooters hit mixed weather bag
IT WAS a case of mixed fortunes with the weather conditions for the nine shooters who entered the 50-target Universal Trench Trophy competition on Sunday.
The first 15 targets were shot by squad one in perfect conditions, with the sun out and a dark north sky making the targets easy to see.
Three shooters were straight at 15 targets. First to miss was Jim Work who missed his 16 target with a slight dulling in conditions. Ross Work also missed his 16 target and Ewen Johnson his 17 target, meaning all three were on for 24s.
Ross dropped a further two to finish the round on 22, Jim and Ewen dropped one apiece to finish the round on 23s, with Andrew Inkster on 21 and John M Laurenson on 18.
The dark north sky that had been a fine background for squad one turned into a shower for squad two and the background sky changed until the targets were difficult to see.
The round was stopped for a short while till the rain cleared but the shooters in squad two had no real chance of challenging those who had shot in better conditions; this can be a factor in clay shooting scores.
The best score from squad two came from Christopher Williamson on 20, a good effort in difficult conditions.
The weather again favoured squad one over their last round with Ewen Johnson going all the way to a 25 straight that was unbeatable. John M Laurenson hit a fine 23 with Jim Work on 21, Ross Work 20 and Andrew Inkster 18.
The second squad was having no luck and shot in poor conditions again but produced very good scores with 20s from Christopher Williamson and Dennis Middleton and a 21 from Bryan Sutherland, who had scraped his first round due to the conditions.
The winner on 48 was Ewen Johnson with Jim Work second on 44 and Ross Work third on 42. They were followed by John M Laurenson 41, Christopher Williamson 40 and Andrew Inkster 39, then Dennis Middleton 34 and Ian Sutherland 29.
On Sunday if weather permits the club is putting on the second of the winter league shoots, a 50-target ABT with a 10am start. Membership for next year is now due and can be paid at the club on Sunday morning.
