Vunk the outlet for punk and garage
THOSE with a penchant for loud rock music will now be able to gorge themselves on a new taster CD showcasing some of Shetland’s top garage bands.
So What, a 10-track compilation album featuring original material from acts including Solar Polar Bear, Bitumen River, Poison Popcorn, The Dogs and Ten Tonne Dozer, is being released under the moniker Vunk Ventures and is described as featuring “groove metal, punk and alternative” sounds.
The project is planned to become an annual event to help provide a gateway for Shetland’s non-traditional musicians to be heard and recognised both inside and outside the isles. Other artists featured are Black Cat Theory, Double Zero, El Pedro, Bacchus and Train to Wales.
A Vunk Ventures spokesman said: “Shetland is well known for its musical talent, which is not only confined to the traditional styles.
“There are a number of musicians in Shetland creating music in alternative styles that unfortunately often go unheard, partly due to the lack of a suitable location to showcase their music.
“It is also hoped that it [the album] will bring the garage bands and bedroom artists out of hiding as all tracks will be considered for the compilations.”
? You can buy So What for £10 from record shops in Lerwick, and it is to be distributed throughout Scotland in the new year.
