Referees’ group in hunt for assistance
The Shetland Referees Group is on the lookout for more volunteers to help officiate during the forthcoming football season in the isles.
Spokesman Steven Goodlad said: “As the new season approaches it is evident that we may struggle to fulfil all league and cup fixtures for the various local associations, due to lack of numbers. This is mainly because of the departure of two experienced referees last season leaving a gap to be filled.”
The group is looking for volunteers to come along to an eight-week course on the Laws of the Game, with those completing the course going on to sit the SFA Introductory Referees’ Exam. Successful candidates will be encouraged to start refereeing at an early date.
The course is being held in Lerwick, starting on Thursday 26th February at 7pm and on subsequent Thursdays thereafter. Anyone over 16 is welcome and the course fee is £30.
Anyone with a couple of hours to spare during the week, or who wishes to play a part in the development of lcoal football, would be very welcome, Mr Goodlad said. It was a case of “no referee, no game”, he added.
