Players on cue to snooker Orkney hopes
Shetland had a resounding victory over Orkney in the annual snooker inter-county, played at the Whitedale Snooker Club on Saturday.
The doubles got under way first and Shetland soon showed their opponents a clean pair of heels. Stephen Dobson and James Ramsay defeated Raymond Smith and Duncan Cameron (O) 3-1; George Fraser and Brydon Mouat beat Billy Taylor and Leonard Mowat (O) 3-0; Leslie Irvine and Alan Harcus lost to Erland Grieve and Roger Robson (O) 3-1; Stanley Nisbet and David Irvine beat Stuart Keldie and Eric Wilson (O) 3-2; Allan Johnson and Colin Irvine beat Ross Corse and Darren Tait (O) 3-1; and Brian Thompson and Chris Young beat Malcolm Scott and Magnus Drever (O) 3-0.
Shetland now had a commanding 5-1 lead and with 12 singles matches to go, only needed five more to win the Jolly Cup.
The first singles tie was between George Fraser and Duncan Cameron (O) with George running out a 3-1 winner. Brydon Mouat took on Leonard Mowat (O) and won 3-2 and Alan Harcus beat Roger Robson (O) 3-1. Allan Johnson beat Malcolm Scott (O) 3-2 and David Irvine beat Ross Corse (O) 3-1.
With the overall result now beyond Orkney, they took the following two games with Leslie Irvine losing out to Stuart Keldie (O) 3-0 and Stanley Nisbet going down to Raymond Smith (O) 3-0.
Shetland then turned the screw with James Ramsay beating Magnus Drever (O) 3-1 before Chris Young lost to Eric Wilson (O) 3-2.
In the final three matches, Colin Irvine beat Darren Tait (O) 3-0, Stephen Dobson beat Erland Grieve (O) 3-2 and Brian Thompson beat Billy Taylor (O) 3-2, rounding off a 14-4 victory.
Shetland captain Bruce Park thanked his players for all their effort and commitment, which enabled them to record Shetland’s biggest win in the inter-county to date.
