Harcus at the double in county golf event
Shetland Golf Club’s Alan Harcus won the county championship for the second time running when he shot rounds of 76 and 75 to win by two strokes from Whalsay’s Stuart Anderson with 74 and 79.
Alan played very steady golf throughout the 36 holes with a lot of birdie chances but the putter wasn’t as hot as the rest of his clubs. In third place was Dodie Williamson with two sub-80 rounds.
Final results were: 1 Alan Harcus 76, 75 (151); 2 Stuart Anderson 74, 79 (153); 3 Dodie Williamson 78, 79 (157); 4 Neil Eunson 80, 85 (165); 5 Robbie Jamieson 89, 77 (166); 6 Ross MacDougal 88, 83 (171).
A new silver quaich was played for the first time presented by both clubs. The quaich, called the Handicap Championship, was won by young Scott Reid of Whalsay Golf Club.
A worthy winner, Scott compiled a net 72 in the first round and followed it with an excellent net 70 for a 142 winning total.
Runner up was Jimmy Sales of Shetland Golf Club with 75, 70 (145), fine golf from Jimmy on a breezy day and maybe his first win at Whalsay Golf Club is not far away.
Final net results: 1 Scott Reid 72, 70 (142); 2 Jimmy Sales 75, 70 (145); 3 Bobby Hutchison 80, 70 (150); 4 Robert P Irvine 75, 78 (153).
Outside of the prize winners the best first net round was Tammy Stewart with 75 and Derek Nicolson on 76 for the second round.
A spokesman thanked Jackson Trawls and JW Grays for sponsoring the event.
Neil Anderson won the T Montgomery Memorial trophy with an excellent net 65 from Anthony Shearer (net 66). The Monthly Medal was won by Stuart Anderson on net 67, with Joe Huntley one shot back on net 68.
