Young badminton players on top form
Shetland Badminton Association held the first of the annual tourna-ments at the weekend.
On Saturday the eight to 10-year-old half-court singles were held at the Scalloway Games Hall.
Junior coach Maurice Haining lead the warm up for everyone while the games were being drawn up.
In the eight-year boys’ competi-tion Josh Carril came out top with Henry Oldbury (both St Clement’s). They played off in the final and Josh won 31-12.
In the nine-year boys’ competition Scott Smith who triumphed with full points and Haldane Bray was second. Scott dominated in the final, winning 31-10.
The seven 10-year-old boys played one another and Aiden Grogan (Sandwick) won all his matches. Angus Cree Hay (St Clements’s) took second spot in a very closely competed group.
In the 10-year-old girls’ round robin Amy Sineath (Sandwick) clocked up 186 with her clean sheet. Nicole Hughson (Yell) came second in another close group.
The eight and nine-year-old girls played together. Bethany Laurenson was the winner of the younger girls and Amy Manson was top in the nine-year group.
Association president Norman Sineath presented the medals to the winners and runners-up in each age category for boys and girls.
A spokeswoman said the asso-ciation would like to thank the parents and helpers who umpired, Helen Laurenson for the tuck shop and Maurice for the warm-up.

Sunday, 22nd November: 11-13 years full court singles at Scalloway games hall, 10am to 3pm. Enter on day.
Sunday, 29th November: 14-16 years singles competition, noon to 4pm. Enter on day.
Sunday, 13th December: Junior team tournament, 10am for under-13s and noon for under-15s. Clubs to enter teams.
Senior players are reminded that there is A and B county training on Thursdays from 9pm to 10.30pm at Clickimin until Christmas and one session on Sunday, 29th Novem-ber.
