Call for islanders to join County’s cup final support
Shetland football supporters are being urged to join the huge Highland crowd heading for Hampden Park to support Ross County in the Scottish Cup Final.
County will be the first team from the Highlands to play in the final of the competition when the Dingwall-based club takes on Dundee United at the national stadium in Glasgow on Saturday 15th May.
The historic match has already sparked an unprecedented ticket rush across the area and further afield, with 14,500 seats snapped up within days of them going on sale.
The Staggies created one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football history when they beat Celtic 2-0 in the semi-final at Hampden on 10th April. Since then the club has been urging people to respond to their rallying cry of “We’re on Our Way” by turning cup final Saturday into mass display of Highland pride in Glasgow.
Ross County president Roy MacGregor said: “I think one or two people suspected I had lost the plot after the semi-final when I said I wanted to get 20,000 people from the Highlands behind the team for the final.
“But sales so far have been absolutely phenomenal and we’ve already got more than twice as many going as we did for the semi. People are really getting caught up in spirit and excitement of something very special that the area has never experienced before – and they want to be there to see it for themselves.”
Ross County visited Shetland in 1999 as guests of Scalloway FC for the village club’s centenary celebrations, when they defeated Scalloway and drew with a county representative side.
MacGregor added: “We have a following in Shetland and I know from the ticketing agents people there have already been buying tickets for the final. The statistics the agents sent us show there have been sales of seats in the Ross County section not just across the Highlands, but throughout the country and it’s great to see Lerwick on the list.
“I hope that in the coming days even more people from the area, whatever their usual football allegiances, will join us in this great Highland adventure at Hampden.”
The Proclaimers’ hit song We’re on Our Way has been adapted into a Ross County anthem for the final by Highland band Torridon and will be available to download on iTunes from Monday. All proceeds from sales of the song are going to the Highland Disability Sport charity.
