Sumburgh strike averted

TALKS aimed at averting further strike action at Sumburgh Airport have apparently paid off.

Meetings between HIAL management and members of the public services union Unite took place on Monday to prevent a repeat of last week’s industrial action.

Around 500 passengers hoping to fly either from or to Shetland had their travel plans disrupted when fire fighters and engineers working at HIAL’s airports staged their first 24 hour strike of the summer.

The strike was being held in protest over a proposed two per cent pay increase, and further action was scheduled to take place on Friday.

But now the strike has been suspended to allow further talks and work on pay to take place.
