Debate to be held on coastguard helicopter

January 8, 2025 | 10.22am

Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has secured a debate on the future of coastguard helicopter services following plans to quadruple response times.

Mr Carmichael previously led a debate on the issue in November 2023, following revelations about the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s plans to quadruple the emergency response time for the helicopter service based at Sumburgh from 15 minutes to 60.

During that debate, the then-government committed to a review of the proposals, which was supposed to be published by the end of 2024 but has yet to be made public.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Mr Carmichael said: “I am glad to secure this debate to get some definitive answers on the future of the search-and-rescue helicopter service in the isles. Ministers in the previous government committed to a review which was to report last year but there has been no sign of it as of yet. We cannot wait any longer.

“The planned quadrupling of response times could easily be the difference between life and death at sea. The blunt truth is that the more you strip back these services the more likely it will be that people fall through the gaps and lives are lost.”

The debate will be held on Tuesday 14th January.

UPDATE: Walls bus slides off road near Tumblin

January 8, 2025 | 8.31am

The Walls bus slid off the road this morning (Wednesday) amid snowy conditions.

The Number nine bus had been spotted off the road near Tumblin just before 8am.

Shetland Islands Council said there were no passengers on the bus at the time and the driver was uninjured.

The bus has since been recovered from the side of the road and a replacement bus is now operating on the route.

Care home criticised in report

January 7, 2025 | 4.16pm

The Walter and Joan Gray care home in Scalloway has been described as unsafe and understaffed in a damning report from the Scottish Care Inspectorate.

While personal care needs are mostly met and rooms were found clean, staffing shortages have put residents at risk of infection, food poisoning and fire at the Church of Scotland facility, according to the report published on Friday.

Across five key factors the report — based on a surprise inspection in November – ranks the home’s service as “weak” while leadership and planning are “adequate”.

Across over a dozen pages the inspectors list medicine mistakes, untrained staff preparing unsafe food and limited access to fresh drinking water.

Inspectors also found broken fire doors and emergency plans which could have evacuated residents to parts of the home at a higher risk of flames. Those plans have since been updated, inspectors noted.

The care home’s manager, Sue Anderson, declined to comment. The Church of Scotland has been contacted for comment.

Community council backs blanket 20mph speed limit

January 7, 2025 | 12.30pm

A blanket 20mph speed limit could be imposed across Lerwick if elected officials accept the views of the town’s community council.

Lerwick Community Council agreed last night (Monday) to back proposals of introducing further speed limits in the town.

However, if implemented, all members agreed to ask for the SIC to consider setting almost every road at the same limit.

Consensus in the meeting felt that safety was paramount and anything that could help keep people from harm should be put in place.

Co-opted member Diana Winfield said people generally think of the roads being used by cars.

“But there is more than that, use them,” Ms Winfield said.

Tuesday’s sailings not cancelled, just delayed, says Northlink

January 7, 2025 | 10.08am

Both north and southbound ferries between Lerwick and Aberdeen this evening (Tuesday) will depart off-schedule and not stop in Orkney because of rough weather.

The southbound sailing scheduled for 4:30pm will instead leave at midnight, and is expected to arrive around 1pm on Wednesday.

The northbound sailing will leave Aberdeen an hour earlier than scheduled at 4pm and may be up to two hours late arriving in Lerwick on Wednesday morning.

Just before 10am this morning NorthLink had announced both sailings would be cancelled altogether, before updating their schedule with the delayed sailings half an hour later.

NorthLink said disruption can be expected to continue through till at least Thursday.

Monday’s sailing from Aberdeen to Lerwick departed early and was bumpy through the journey.

“I can’t lie to you folks it’s going to be poor,” Hrossey’s captain announced leaving Aberdeen harbour.

“We’re going to make a run for it, but it’s northerly swells and we’re heading north so we’re going to be slamming into it all night.”

More detailed updates will follow throughout the week as forecasts are updated, NorthLink said.

A road accident took place outside Lerwick this afternoon.

The incident, involving a car and a lorry, happened at the Brig o’ Fitch.

The road remained passable, but with long queues.

Big smiles after big skate catch

January 5, 2025 | 2.25pm

It’s an impressive catch by anyone’s standards, and for fishing enthusiast Kieran Llewellyn there was plenty of reason to smile behind such an impressive haul.

Kieran caught this large skate, weighing an estimated 45 to 50lbs.

NorthLink warns of possible disruption

January 5, 2025 | 10.10am

NorthLink has warned harsh conditions may impact on its services over the coming days.

Tomorrow’s northbound sailing to Shetland is under review, in anticipation of poor weather. The operator says the Hrossey may leave Aberdeen at the earlier time of 4pm instead of the current scheduled time of 7pm.

Similarly, the southbound sailing of the Hjaltland may be subject to weather-related delays.

Tuesday services are also under review.

NorthLink says more detailed updates will follow as forecasts are updated.

Todd takes podium finish in Glasgow

January 4, 2025 | 6.31pm

An isles athlete has taken a podium finish – and set a new Shetland record – at the Scottish Athletics Indoor championships.

Layla Todd took bronze in the U20 women’s 3,000 race on Saturday afternoon, setting a huge 17-second PB in the process.

The achievement comes as a new Shetland record of 9:52:31, and represents a great start to the year for the young athlete.

Todd has thanked NorthLink Ferries, sportscotland and Shetland Islands Council for their support.

Yellow warning for ice issued

January 4, 2025 | 11.58am

The MET Office has issued a fresh warning for ice, as the winter blast continues to grip the isles.

The yellow warning is valid from 4pm today until 10am tomorrow.

It follows heavy snow falls and sub-zero temperatures.

Weather disruption to rubbish collections

January 3, 2025 | 5.04pm

Wintry weather has hampered council waste service collections in the isles.

Waste service teams have not been able to collect grey-lidded recycling bins in the South, North and West Mainland.

This has also affected the pickup of household waste bins in some side roads.

Attempts will be made to collect household rubbish in Lerwick and Scalloway tomorrow, weather permitting.

The service will return to normal on Monday. But grey-lidded bins will not now be picked up until the next scheduled date.

The SIC has apologised for the disruption.

POLL: Will Shetland have a tunnel by 2030?

January 3, 2025 | 12.41pm

Fixed links could be a reality in the isles this decade, the council’s political leader has said.

Emma Macdonald made the bold claim after the Scottish government committed to giving £10 million to the SIC for improving inter-island transport, during its budget at the end of last year.

Although Mrs Macdonald was reserved at the time, she now believes commuters could be “driving through a tunnel in Shetland during this decade, with more in construction.”

The SIC has been exploring the possibility of fixed links to serve Unst, Yell, Whalsay, Bressay and Fetlar through the Inter-Island Transport Connectivity project, which also considers ferries.

Campaigners have been vocal about the need for tunnels to maintain and improve the population of the outer isles and for smoother business operations.

And they were pleased to see Mrs Macdonald’s enthusiasm for the project.

What do you think? Will the first fixed links be built this decade?

WATCH: Big otter makes appearance

January 3, 2025 | 10.48am

It may be too cold for many of us to venture outside, but this hardy otter was not to be put off.

The big draatsie was spotted making its way from The Shetland Times carpark this morning (Friday).

Meanwhile, anyone looking to travel by inter-island ferry might be advised to check before setting off.

Advice on the Yell Sound information line advises of a single vessel operating this morning until further notice.

The advisor even goes as far as to discourage anyone from leaving their house, advising folk to “sit at home with the fluffy slippers on and a sweet sherry”.

Royal Mail suspends postal service outside of Lerwick

January 3, 2025 | 10.17am

Royal Mail has suspended deliveries to rural areas due to snow and ice.

The decision has left homes outside Lerwick without mail deliveries, and country shops are also without the latest edition of The Shetland Times. The paper is normally delivered to rural shops by Royal Mail.

Deliveries are expected to resume tomorrow, weather pemitting. However, a new yellow weather warning has been issued from 4pm today until 10am tomorrow.

The Shetland Times remains available in Lerwick shops. Shetland Times staff made deliveries in the town this morning.

Anyone in Lerwick with a subscription for The Shetland Times will receive their delivery today, but anyone outside Lerwick will unfortunately not.

A free calendar is included in The Shetland Times.

Royal Mail said it thanked customers for patience and understanding during this disruption to its service.

“Once the weather clears, we will ensure deliveries recommence when and where it is safe to do,” it said.

Snow and ice grip isles

January 3, 2025 | 8.17am

Icy conditions are gripping the isles this morning, as a wintry blast impacts on travel.

It comes after a Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice was issued yesterday.

Temperatures have reached as low as -2.4C, with a wind chill of -8C.

There have been further snow showers overnight, causing travel difficulty for many.

A gritter reportedly left the road this morning in an area near Gonfirth.
