Missing salmon cages spotted east of Bressay by Marine Scotland plane

The missing salmon cages which went adrift from their moorings south of Unst during the Christmas storms have at last been spotted.

The 12 large pens were discovered around 89 miles east of Bressay today by the crew of Marine Scotland’s spotter aircraft which has been carrying out regular searches for them.

The trawler Opportune is closing in on their position and is due to remain with them until a Danish tug, hired by owners Meridian Salmon Group, arrives at the scene to tow them to the shore.

Representatives from Meridian have been in Shetland this week to overlook the search for the missing cages, amid concerns the pens could be a danger to shipping in the area.
