Netball player Leyland chosen for Scottish under-21 squad
Netball player Sophie May Leyland has been selected for the Scottish under-21 squad for the European Championships in Cardiff.
This is an annual tournament in which Leyland previously took part at under-17 national level. She has now been selected as part of the final squad of 12 for the older age group.
The squad will be travelling down to Cardiff this week to play against England, Wales and Northern Ireland’s national teams. The tournament will run from Friday to Sunday and Scotland will play each team once.
Leyland said she was delighted to be selected for the final Scottish squad and was very excited to be taking part in this tournament.
She said: “This is one of the biggest tournaments to be selected for under-21 level in Europe. It will be a great experience to play against England, Northern Ireland and take on Wales again as we have already played them this year.
“Each of the teams have players that are also part of the open national netball squads, like our squad, so it will be a great contest.”
This year Scotland will be hosting the World Youth Netball Championships in August. After the European Championships, Leyland will continue her training extensively throughout the summer in preparation for that competition and hopes to make the final squad for it.
