Viking style rig would help (William Bellchambers)

The mast breaking on Andrew Halcrow’s boat Elsi Arrub is an increasingly common occurrence.

Masts seem to be made these days just to meet the average expected conditions. Then when extreme conditions are met the mast fails.

I think that a “Viking” style rig with a “Shetland” pattern sail would be best in these circumstances.

This could be an opportunity for a company here, to make the mast and spar, the sail and retrofit the hull fittings, to make a storm-proof boat for a global market.

Who knows: Andrew Halcrow might want to be the company’s first customer.
