Shetland’s footballers clinched the overall Stuart Cup in the junior inter-county with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Orkney yesterday evening.

The athletics team had earlier gone down narrowly by 100 points to 94, meaning Orkney had a five-point lead going into the football match. With five points for a goal Shetland had to win by two or more goals to clinch the overall win.

After day one the score stood at 93 points to 92 to Shetland but the Orkney athletes’ success turned that round to 192 to 187 in the home side’s favour.

The football match saw Lee Irvine score twice to put Shetland five points ahead but an Orkney goal in the 68th minute drew it back level again. The glory was secured by overall team captain Eoin Leask’s goal a minute later. The margin of victory was 202-197.

Individual sports results:
Swimming: Orkney 32, Shetland 62
Netball: Orkney 55, Shetland 26
Hockey: Orkney 1, Shetland 1
Athletics: Orkney 100, Shetland 94
Football: Orkney 1, Shetland 3

Fantastic performance by our team. Couldn’t believe the games were happening on the very weekend I was in Orkney for a short visit from the mainland.
I remember, with great affection, my trip with the team there in 1975. Unfortunately the result was not as good as this one.
