Lerwick Thistle win County Shield in victory over Celtic

Lerwick Thistle have won the County Shield following a 2-1 victory over Lerwick Celtic after extra time at Bressay football.

The County Shield final had to be replayed yesterday after the original fixture at the Gilbertson Park on 8th September was abandoned at half time because of poor weather while Celtic were 4-0 up.

As the Lerwick football pitches are now closed the match took place in Bressay.

Windy conditions made things difficult for both teams.

After 10 minutes Celtic went 1-0 up with a James Aitken penalty after Thistle’s Kristoffer Thomason brought down Celtic’s Billy Buggy in the box.

In the 38th minute Thistle’s Stuart Copland equalised when he slotted the ball past Celtic’s keeper Keane Haynes in the six yard box.

It was a very close match with both teams having their share of chances and it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Thistle scored their match winning goal in the first half of extra time when the ball ended up in the net following a Calvin Leask corner.

Thistle also had a chance to go 3-1 up in the closing minutes of extra time when an Aaron Leask shot came off the bar.

Following the match Shetland Football Partnership secretary Michael Duncan presented the County Shield to Thistle’s captain Calvin Leask.
