Mr Steel was forced to cancel his performance at late notice owing to personal reasons.

Local promoter Davie Gardner apologised for any inconvenience caused and stated that the late notice given to ticket holders was, unfortunately, unavoidable.

He added that Mr Steel was “very conscious and very apologetic” for the cancellation and has promised to return at a later date to make amends for the cancellation.

Mr Gardner also said that the comedian was keen to offer some sort of “special dispensation” for ticket holders for Sunday’s performance when he next visits.

Mr Steel was forced to cancel his performance (last night) at late notice owing to personal reasons – when? We paid for our tickets weeks ago, and of today have not had any notice of cancellation. We (at 17.10 on Monday) read that “local promoter Davie Gardner’s apologises for any inconvenience caused and stating that the late notice given to ticket holders was, unfortunately, unavoidable”.

We are fans of Mark Steel, listen to his series on radio 4 and had looked forward to seeing him live, in the flesh. Because we live so far away we had booked to have a meal and stay over in Lerwick to make a special event of it. Luckily at mid-day yesterday we heard from a friend that the event had been called off,; the hotel kindly refunded our late cancellation fee and we have received the refund for our tickets, but no notice of cancellation of the show has come our way – this is the first we have seen of the cancellation.

I owe an apology to the promoters of the cancelled gig on Sunday evening – Mark Steel, at the Legion. Whilst we did hear of the late cancellation at noon on the Sunday, it has been made clear to me that it was an authorised person who had informed us on behalf of the promoters, and not the unofficial rumour that I understood it to be.

I now understand that it would have been difficult for the organisers to contact everyone personally, quickly, and as soon as they could to save inconvenience, and I am pleased that we did not make the trip up to Lerwick unnecessarily.

Sorry this was not made clear to me on Sunday, I would not have been in any way critical of the way the cancellation was publicised.

Thanks for this Kathy and once again apologies for any inconvenience caused by this sadly unavoidable cancellation and situation.

I sadly only heard myself that it could not happen relatively late on Sunday morning I’m afraid. We then had to have this officially confirmed by Mark’s management in conjunction with the overall tour promoter before I could personally put into effect the formal cancellation process for the Shetland show.

I’m therefor indebted to the folk at the Shetland Box Office in Islesburgh who immediately set about trying to contact everyone directly / personally with a view to hopefully letting them know as far ahead of time as possible via the contact list they thankfully had for everyone who had purchased tickets in advance – while the only option open to myself personally (I was down in Glasgow at the time – ironically for a concert that was also cancelled) was to put a post on Facebook advising everyone I could via social media of the cancellation – which I was able to do at 1pm on Sunday.

Unfortunately we will inevitably face late cancellations for show’s from time to time due to unforseen circumstances such as these, travel / weather disruption or whatever – especially in a place like Shetland. Thankfully it’s pretty rare this happens, but when it does we always endeavour to let everyone know asap. Thank heavens for the Box Office in that respect as I say.

So apologies again to everyone who was inconvenienced or disappointed by this. Mark has promised to return to Shetland asap and has said he will personally make amends for having to cancel this time around.

Thanks again meantime to everyone who bought tickets for this show and sorry again it could not happen this time around.

    Davie Gardner
